General Info

MTB Chicks is an informal mountain biking group for female riders meeting up around once a month for an off-road ride in the Greater Wellington area over Spring-Summer. Rides are basically about exploring the landscape and enjoying some routes you might not choose to ride by yourself.

Weekend Rides

Rides are typically for around 2-3 hours.  Routes are aimed at early intermediate riders+ with a focus on endurance rather than technical riding.  In practice this means you have some mountain biking experience, are happy enough on a long climb and are generally comfortable with grade 3 level tracks - but not too proud to get off and walk the occasional tricky spot.

For further details on trail grading refer to trail grading info.

Pace is social, distance is moderate - i.e. averaging around 10km/hour, depending on terrain, for around 20-25 km.  We have a leader and assign a back marker to keep the group together

Ride details are published on the website around two weeks beforehand and emailed out during the week before to a mailing list.  Future ride dates are also posted on the website along with location details as they are confirmed.

Fit with Revolve Cycling

If you’re wondering how MTB Chicks fits/sits alongside Revolve in the Wellington's Women’s MTB scene, it’s basically complementary…. the history is I formed MTB Chicks in May 2009 after moving to WGN from the UK.  The simple aim was meeting some new riding buddies of a similar level and enjoying some interesting routes.  It’s pretty much a straight copy of a popular group I used to run in South Oxfordshire but with different routes!  Revolve evolved a couple of months later, initially as a company which has recently turned into charitable trust, and has much a wider focus/resource base around encouraging women’s riding both on and off road, with a corresponding wide range of activities.  Hence it being much bigger and more widely known.

Going forward

I’m basically a runner who enjoys mountain biking for fun/adventure with a passion for exploring the landscape, figuring out routes and sharing them with some like-minded people who hopefully enjoy them too.  Over the last couple of years I’ve met some fantastic people through this group and we’ve shared some great rides/adventures.  So the plan is to continue plus welcome any new people who are into the same kind of thing too.  That’s basically it!
