Once you're up the 3km forest road climb there's the option to do a forest trail loop and play around on the single tracks around the top of the climb.  There's also a couple of single tracks options to come down on.  If you have a couple of hours to spare on you way back from somewhere and want to stretch your legs it's worth a diversion off SH1 - just ask in the bike shop on the main street for a trail map and some track recommendations.
